From humble beginnings: the founding and growth of Meridian Trust
Meridian Trust Federal Credit Union has produced landmark successes and expansive growth. Chartered in Cheyenne in January 1954, a small office opened two months later in the State Board of Charities and Reform.
In 1955, the credit union was moved to a basement storage room in the Wyoming State Capital, where volunteers took deposits for their fellow state employees. Known then as Wyoming Employees Federal Credit Union, it hired its first full-time employee in 1958.
After spending a year working out of a garage facility behind the Wyoming Travel Commission, the current property at 2223 Warren Avenue in downtown Cheyenne was purchased in 1977.
Meridian Trust began opening more branches across the state, including in Lander, Jackson and Rawlins, and its first branch outside the Wyoming border, into Scottsbluff, Nebraska in 2013 and in 2020, we opened a branch in northern Colorado in the town of Wellington.
In January of 2021, we opened our third branch in our home city of Cheyenne to serve residents, workers, and commuters in the northern section of the capital city.
Into the future: Meridian Trust today, tomorrow, and beyond
The historic success of our dynamic financial cooperative continues with assets at the start of 2021 exceeding $500 million with over 100 employees serving more than 32,000 members. Kim Withers, CEO from 1994 to 2024, envisioned a promising future for members and employees of the credit union. “We have always embraced the idea of service for our members and continuing our success as a financial co-op.”
Throughout our history, the objective of Meridian Trust has not changed. Offering the best in personal service and the highest-quality financial products at the lowest possible cost has always been fundamental to our organization. This stands true whether the service is provided at a physical branch location, over the phone through our dedicated call center, or in utilizing the newest and greatest in online and electronic tools.
As members become more interested in managing their finances around the clock, Meridian Trust keeps pace. The credit union provides online account opening, along with free online bill pay and strong electronic banking tools. In 2021, we are upgrading our organization’s website, mobile app and online banking systems.
Our goal of serving members has not changed since 1954, only the tools have to meet modern demands with increased speed, efficiency and access.
